King’s Ransom by ED McBAIN
It’s a
crime&mystery story of kindness and greed.
Abstract:
Doug King, one of the stockholder of ‘’Granger
shoes’’, tried to get even more voting stock from another man in Boston to
become the president of the company. Hence, he assigned his assistant to fly
to boston to make this deal so that he could have more money and power than
ever before. However, JeffReynolds, the only son of King’s chauffer, was
kidnapped when he was playing with Bobby, the son of King, outside the house
of Mr. King. At the bignning, the two kidnappers misunderstood that the one
who they had taken away is King’s son, Bobby, and asked King to pay the
ransom to get his son back. Although they finally found that their son wasn’t
kidnapped, it’s still a matter of a innocent boy’s life. Everyone, including
Jeff’s dad, thought that Mr. King would pay the ransom no matter who the
hostage is. However, King did’t care about Jeff at all, and if he pay the
ransom, he won’t have the money to buy the voting stock, not mention to get
the presidency of ‘’Grand shoes’’. Despite the fact that everyone despised
his dicision, he’s impervious to the criticism. On the day the kidnappers
asked Mr. King to pay the ransom, the police followed King’s car and finally
caught the bastard Sy Barnard in the woods. Finally, Jeff is safe and free
again.
The most impressed:
I think that the person who I’m impressed
with is King’s wife Diane. In the story, she insisted that her husband should
pay the ransom to save Jeff, even though she know that her husband need the
money to avoid being kicked out of the company.
This kind of
great kindness is really needed in today’s society because we people now put
more emphasis on our own interest to survive the highly competitive
surroundings. As far as I’m concerned ,only by helping each others ,can we
enrich our lives.
Reflections:
After reading this novel, I’am totally shocked
by the character Doug King because I have the same personality as he did in
the story.
When in high school, I was so narrow-minded
and always reject others request for help especially for studies. I was
pretty scared that if I assist them ,they would do better next time and surpass
me in the ranking.
Although I am a now more open –minded
person, there are still a lot for me to improve and become more mature as
Daug King did at the end of the story.
Statement:
In my opinion, ’’King’s Ransom’’ isn’t
only a reading book for teenagers but the reflections of life experience. Written
in easy words, the story is still full of excitement to enjoy and principles
to learn. No matter how old you are, the book is absolutely worth your
reading in a tranquil afternoon.
